Birds

There are many options available to you when you are ready to acquire your birds. Shelters, family farms, hobbyists and small hatcheries may be an appropriate choice for your situation.

NOTE: Please NEVER purchase or accept a bird or animal that has been dyed with inks or colorants (pastel Easter chicks, bunnies, or ducklings) or an animal that has been debeaked (top portion of beak removed), UNLESS it is a rescue through an adoption program. By purchasing a mutilated animal, one encourages these harmful, cruel and unnecessary practices.

"If robin redbreast in a cage puts all heaven in a rage, how feels heaven when dies the billionth battery hen?" --Spike Milligan

About Chicken Run Rescue:

Every year, domestic fowl, mostly chickens, are impounded by Minneapolis Animal Control (MAC). These birds are victims of neglect, abuse and abandonment, sometimes used as a source of eggs or intended for slaughter, fighting or ritual sacrifice. Some are the discarded outcome of "nature lessons" for children or after a hobby that no longer holds interest. Prior to July 2001, most domestic fowl were reluctantly killed simply because MAC had nowhere for them to go.

Chicken Run Rescue was founded in 2001 to assist domestic fowl and Minneapolis Animal Control by finding adoptive homes. After their release from MAC, Chicken Run provides the birds with temporary shelter and vet care, locates and screens adopters and transports the birds to their new homes. There is a special need for rooster homes.

Dr. den Boer has much experience in poultry health issues and concerns.
She is HIGHLY recommended by me for all veterinary care and work!

Dr. Donna den Boer attended MacAlester from 1946 until her graduation in 1950. After doing special studies in Hematology, along with graduate work in French, Dr. den Boer graduated in 1961 as the only woman in her class at the University of Minnesota College of Veterinary Medicine.

Dr. den Boer moved back to Minneapolis in 1988 and opened a veterinary clinic. Her practice encompasses traditional, Western veterinary procedures and incorporates other holistic considerations and practices, such as the importance of good nutrition and the use of acupuncture.

She has always been involved her her community, writing columns on animal care and pet health for her local neighborhood papers, both in Los Angeles and here in Minneapolis. She is involved in working with and doing outreach to mentally retarded adults at St. Stephen's church in Minneapolis.
